Design
brief:
10m
wide, 276m2 block with a side slope posed obvious challenges.
Clients had owned the old shack halfway up Yamba Hill
for a number of years and didn’t know where to
start. They were ready to build their beach home and
knew there were beautiful views over the Clarence River
entrance.
How to configure three bedrooms, study, car accommodation,
have enough outdoor area to enjoy the magnificent climate
and views, avoid the southerly winds and westerly sun,
left them perplexed. They had lots of visitors too,
so the guest room needed to be separate. To satisfy
all their requests they thought was a big ask.
Design
Solution:
The
only solution was to work with what nature provided
and build to the slope. Three distinct levels interacting
with each in a tri level design allow the zoning required.
The double height levels protect from bad weather on
the south westerly side and house the utility and night
time occupation areas. The mid level with study, kitchen,
dining and luxury decks faces north east is voluminous
and flooded with light. With a perfect north east orientation,
it’s warm in winter and cool in summer and looks
straight out to the views of the river entrance. Laundry
solution, cut out wall and magnificent views from Bed
1 are stand out features, and the clients are delighted
with their perfect beach house.
